Overcast days are actually amazing for photos—no squinting, just beautiful soft light. Hotel room window light creates the sweetest morning snuggle shots.

I know many of us head to the beach in the morning and early afternoon, which often means dealing with that mid-day sun. It can feel harsh, but I still love taking pictures! One of my favorite types of photos to capture is when I’m sitting in my beach chair, looking up at my children playing. The light reflecting naturally from the bright sand illuminates their faces perfectly, and with that beautiful blue sky behind them, it creates truly stunning images. It’s a great reminder that even bright sun can be your friend if you know how to work with it!

I absolutely love getting down to eye level with my kids. Seeing the world from their perspective is so magical! Getting low truly helps me capture more of the emotion and action of what they’re doing – whether it’s the intense focus on building a sandcastle, the sheer joy of a mini-golf victory dance, or their wide-eyed wonder exploring something new. Those shots feel so much more intimate and authentic.

Portrait Mode on your phone is truly a game-changer, especially when you’re in a crowded area like a popular tourist spot or a bustling theme park. I’ve found it incredibly useful when I want to really focus in on one of my children and capture their unique expression. It beautifully blurs out the busy background, allowing their joy, wonder, or even that hilarious ice cream-covered smile to truly pop and become the star of the photo!

Tip #5: Don’t Forget to Get IN the Photos

Set that timer or ask a friendly stranger—you deserve to be in the memories too. Simple poses that look natural and feel comfortable for everyone. Teaching older kids to take photos means more opportunities for mom to be included. Remember: imperfect photos with everyone in them beat perfect photos without you. Grab a compact tripod you can throw in your beach bag.

This is a tip I truly live by, especially as a mom of five! For a long time, I’d come home from vacations and realize I was barely in any of the photos – it was always me behind the camera. I know some people might not love them, but my selfie stick has become one of my favorite ways to make sure I’m included in those precious family moments! If I don’t have it, I’ll happily use the front camera on my phone.
