What to Wear for Your Kids’ Personality Session

We’ve all been there, right? Staring at a closet full of clothes, wondering how on earth to pick the perfect outfits for a photo session that truly reflect our kids and don’t make them uncomfortable. As a mom of five, I know the outfit struggle is real! I totally understand this struggle of trying to find the right outfits for my own kids’ photos, and it was through trial and error that I slowly figured it out.

I often hear from parents who are stressed about what their kids should wear, wanting everything to be just right for their personality portraits. My goal is to take that stress away and help you choose clothing that complements your child’s unique spirit, enhances the authentic moments we’ll capture, and makes the session even smoother!

Experience – Making the Session Comfortable (Starting with Outfits!)

The whole point of a personality portrait session is to capture your child’s authentic joy and unique spirit, right? That means creating an environment where they feel completely at ease, free to giggle, explore, and just be themselves. And honestly, that starts with what they’re wearing!

When kids wear clothes that are uncomfortable—think scratchy fabrics, too-tight waistbands, or outfits that restrict their movement—it immediately makes them not want to be there. And I totally get it, because as an adult, I feel the exact same way! If they’re constantly tugging, itching, or feeling restricted, it’s really hard for them to relax and play, which is when those genuine expressions naturally come out.

Choosing comfortable, breathable clothing allows your little ones to move freely, whether they’re twirling, jumping, or just snuggling into you. When they’re physically comfortable, they’re much more likely to be emotionally present and happy, making the entire session a fun, memorable experience for everyone. This way, you can truly focus on connecting with your children, leaving all the stress of discomfort behind.

Expertise – My Eye for Outfits (and Why it Matters!)

After years of photographing families and, of course, navigating five kids’ wardrobes myself, I’ve developed a keen eye for what truly works in front of the camera, especially for capturing those authentic personality moments. My goal isn’t just to take a pretty picture; it’s to create timeless art that you and your family will cherish for years to come. And believe it or not, outfits play a huge role in achieving that!

My expertise comes into play by guiding you towards choices that enhance the warmth, richness, and emotive storytelling of your images, while ensuring everyone feels comfortable. I know which colors and patterns photograph beautifully in natural light, and which ones can distract from your child’s genuine expressions. For instance, while bright neon colors might be fun, they can often cast unflattering color onto skin tones in photos. Similarly, busy patterns or large logos can draw the eye away from your child’s face and personality.

I’ve learned through countless sessions that “less is more” when it comes to accessories and overly complicated outfits for kids. Simple, well-fitting pieces with good texture allow for natural movement and genuine expressions, which is exactly what we want to capture in a personality session. I can guide you on avoiding common pitfalls, like polos for boys, or outfits with words and logos that can quickly date your photos.

Ultimately, my expertise is about simplifying the styling process for you, helping you choose pieces that feel authentic to your family, and ensuring your final images are “timeless” and reflect your child’s true uniqueness, rather than just a passing trend.

Comfort – Feeling Great in Their Own Skin (and Clothes!)

We’ve already touched on it, but comfort is king, especially for kids! Our personality sessions are all about letting your children be themselves, exploring, laughing, and showing off their unique quirks. When they’re physically comfortable in their clothes, they’re much more likely to relax, forget the camera is there, and just enjoy the experience.

Think soft, breathable fabrics that allow for movement. Restrictive clothing, scratchy tags, or stiff materials can lead to fidgeting, irritability, and ultimately, expressions that aren’t truly genuine. The goal is for them to forget what they’re wearing so they can focus on having fun. This applies to everyone, including Mom and Dad!

My sessions are designed to be “easy and comfortable”, and the clothing choices are a huge part of that. We want the outfits to complement your child’s natural joy, not hinder it. By choosing pieces that feel authentic and practical for movement and play, we ensure that everyone feels comfortable in front of the camera, leading to genuinely relaxed and heartfelt photographs.

Quality – Enhancing Your Timeless Images with Thoughtful Choices

You’re investing in professional photographs because you want beautiful, high-quality images that stand the test of time – photos that you’ll love looking at year after year. The clothes your children wear play a significant role in achieving that level of quality and timelessness. It’s about ensuring the focus remains on their genuine expressions and connections, not on distracting elements.

From my experience, certain clothing choices can actually detract from the overall quality and artistic naturalism of your photographs:

  • Avoid words or logos: Anything with words or prominent logos can quickly date a photo and draw the eye away from your child’s face. We want the focus to be on their authentic self, not a brand.
  • Steer clear of neon: Neon colors can cast unflattering color onto skin tones, making it harder to capture those warm, rich, and beautiful tones you see in my work.
  • Polos are a no-go: While they seem like a safe choice, polo shirts, especially on toddlers and dads, don’t tend to photograph well. We want clean lines and comfortable fits that allow for natural movement.
  • Too many accessories: Less is more here. Avoid anything like an Apple Watch or hair ties on wrists, as these can be distracting in a timeless image.
  • Exact matching outfits or colors: Gone are the days of everyone in matching white t-shirts and jeans! Exact matching outfits can look stiff and less authentic. Instead, think about coordinating colors and textures that complement each other, allowing individual personalities to shine through while still looking cohesive.
  • Rethink the “safe” option: Don’t go boring for photos just because you’re scared to “make a mistake.” You are not boring—don’t let your outfit be. Express yourself!
  • Avoid black unless it has interesting texture: Black can sometimes photograph flat unless it’s a really interesting texture.

My goal is to capture meaningful moments, truly showcasing your children authentically during this fleeting time in their lives and helping parents to remember this special time. By carefully selecting outfits that complement, rather than distract, we ensure the professional quality of your images truly shines, creating timeless art for your family.

Creativity – Unlocking More Expressive & Dynamic Moments

One of the things I love most about personality portraits is the freedom to capture real, unscripted moments – the genuine joy, curious gazes, and dynamic movement that truly reflects your child’s spirit. It’s about seeing what others might miss and turning everyday interactions into artistic naturalism. Your outfit choices actually play a big part in unlocking these creative possibilities!

When kids are dressed in comfortable, flexible clothing, they’re free to move, play, and interact naturally without restriction. This allows me, as your photographer, to capture more dynamic angles and authentic expressions. Imagine a child twirling in a soft dress, or a little boy easily climbing and exploring in comfortable pants and a henley. These fluid movements translate into beautiful, emotive storytelling in your photographs.

Conversely, stiff fabrics, overly formal attire, or ill-fitting clothes can limit a child’s natural movements, making them less likely to engage playfully, which in turn limits the creative, candid moments we can capture. My “film look” style, with its soft highlights and focus on movement, truly shines when outfits allow for effortless expression.

By choosing outfits that prioritize comfort and natural flow, you’re not just dressing your child; you’re enabling a more creative and expressive session, ensuring we capture those unique, fleeting moments that truly showcase their personality.

Stress-Free – Simplifying Your Session Prep, Starting with Wardrobe

One of my biggest goals as your photographer is to make your entire experience, from booking to receiving your beautiful images, as easy and comfortable as possible. And a huge part of that starts before the session even begins – with what to wear! The thought of coordinating outfits for your kids can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

That’s where my guidance comes in. I’m here to help you navigate these choices, ensuring you feel confident and prepared. As a busy mom myself, I know that minimizing stress is key. This is why I recommend taking some time the night before your session to make sure everything is washed, ironed, steamed, laid out, and ready to go. This simple step prevents you from entering our session stressed out and frazzled!

By providing clear, practical advice on selecting outfits that work well for personality portraits – focusing on comfort, timelessness, and avoiding common pitfalls – I aim to take the guesswork out of wardrobe planning. My expertise helps you avoid that last-minute scramble and ensures that when our session day arrives, you can simply relax and enjoy connecting with your family. This preparation allows you to make the day a fun one for your entire family, turning photo day into an event everyone looks forward to.
