How to Prep Your Home for a Lifestyle Family Session

Your Home Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect for Beautiful Lifestyle Family Photos

I get it—I just told you I’m coming to photograph your family inside your actual house, and now you’re mentally calculating whether you have time to repaint the living room, replace your couch, and deep clean every surface before I arrive.

Take a breath. If you’ve been searching for how to prepare home for photo session without losing your mind, you are in the right place. Your home doesn’t need a makeover. It just needs a little prep, and I’m going to walk you through exactly what that looks like. In my own home, I’ve come to a place of peace with embracing the mess. It really is just a season in our lives, and I promise you, someday our homes will be clean again. But right now? There is a special, fleeting beauty in this “crazy” stage of life, and my favorite thing to do is find the magic right in the middle of it.

What I’m Actually Looking For (Hint: It’s Not a Spotless House)

When I walk into your home, I’m not checking for dust on the baseboards or seeing if you’ve vacuumed under the rug. I’m not looking for a magazine-perfect layout; I’m looking for the way your family actually lives and loves in your space.

I recently had a family who made a request that I absolutely loved: they asked me to include the “crazy mess” of their current life. They wanted to remember exactly what this stage felt like—toys on the floor, lived-in spaces, and all. Those images ended up having so much life and so many memories because they were real. A “photo-ready” house is nice, but a home that tells your family’s story is much more beautiful.

Chase the Light (And I’ll Show You Where to Find It)

Since I focus on using natural light to create that timeless, film-like feel, the first thing I’ll do is scout for the brightest spots in your home.

Every house is situated differently, so the “best” room changes from home to home. Usually, we find the best light in the living room or the primary bedroom, but don’t stress about “dark” corners. I’ll help you find the windows and rooms that will make your family glow.

  • Pro Tip: Before I arrive, go ahead and open all the blinds and turn off those overhead “yellow” lights. Natural light is our best friend!

The Quick Declutter That Actually Makes a Difference

My philosophy is “clear the surfaces, keep the soul.” If there’s something distracting—like a stray phone charger or a stack of mail—we can easily slide it out of the frame. I’m very familiar with family life, and I have no problem moving a chair or a basket if it helps the composition.

However, please don’t hide the things that matter! I love incorporating items that are special to you. I always bring my own wraps for newborns, but if you have a special blanket or a wrap that means something to your family, that is exactly what we should use. Those personal touches are what make these photos yours.

Room-by-Room Prep Made Simple

  • The Main Bedroom: This is often where the “snuggle” magic happens. Don’t worry about a deep clean—just pulling up the duvet and clearing the nightstands is plenty.
  • The Living Area: We’ll look for the cozy corners. If the kids’ art is on the fridge or toys are in the nook, leave them! That’s part of the “warm and cozy” vibe we’re going for.
  • The Nursery: We’ll focus on the rocking chair or the crib area where you spend those quiet, intimate moments.

The Stuff You Can Totally Skip

You have permission to not be perfect.

  • You don’t need a deep clean.
  • You don’t need to buy new decor.
  • You don’t need to stress if the beds aren’t perfectly made.

I chose lifestyle photography because I love real life, and your real life—right now—is worth documenting.

Prepping the Humans (And Pets!) Is Just as Important

At the end of the day, your family’s energy matters so much more than the state of your kitchen. A relaxed morning with happy kids (and maybe a tired, well-behaved dog!) will always result in better photos than a morning spent frantically cleaning. My goal is to make this easy and comfortable for you.

Your Home Is Already Beautiful

I do this because I believe every mother deserves to see her own beauty and the beauty of her family, even in the middle of the chaos. I want these photos to be an encouraging reminder that your home is a sacred space where your family’s unique story unfolds every day. Trust the process, let go of the “perfection” standard, and let’s capture the memories you’ll want to hold onto forever.
