How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session

You know that feeling when you look at a beautiful family photo and wish you could freeze those precious moments forever? Family photos are more than just pictures; they’re tangible memories, little pieces of your story that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. But let’s be honest, the idea of a family photo session can sometimes feel a little overwhelming, right? What do we wear? Where should we go? Will the kids cooperate?

That’s exactly why I’ve put together this comprehensive guide: ‘How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session.’ My goal is to take all the guesswork out of the equation, making your experience with Jeri Marlow Photography as comfortable, warm, and fun as possible. Because when you’re prepared, you’re relaxed, and that’s when the real magic happens – those authentic, beautiful connections shine through, creating timeless art you’ll adore. Let’s dive in and make your next family photo session a breeze!

Early Planning & Communication (Weeks Before)

The journey to beautiful family photos starts long before picture day, with thoughtful planning and open communication. Think of me as your guide, here to simplify the process every step of the way!

A. Choosing Your Photographer: Well, since you’re here, you’ve already found me, Jeri Marlow Photography! But generally, when choosing a photographer, it’s always a good idea to research portfolios and styles to ensure they align with your vision. What’s most important to me is creating a deep connection with you and your little ones, ensuring your session is easy and comfortable, and capturing that ‘Masterpiece & Connection with Timeless Artistry’ that truly reflects your family’s unique warmth and beauty.

B. Selecting a Location: This is where we get to bring your vision to life! During our pre-session consultation (which is a key part of every Jeri Marlow Photography experience!), we’ll chat about the perfect backdrop for your family. Whether you dream of a cozy in-home lifestyle session that captures your everyday magic, or an outdoor adventure in one of Temecula’s beautiful spots like Sykes Ranch Park or Glen Arbor Park, we’ll find a location that truly speaks to your family’s personality. We’ll consider everything from the best lighting to practicalities like easy access and comfort for the kids.

C. Defining Your Vision & Goals: Before your session, let’s connect and define what you envision for your photos. Do you love candid, playful moments, or are you hoping for some beautifully posed portraits? Are there specific groupings you want to make sure we capture – perhaps individual shots of each child, or a special moment between siblings? Don’t hesitate to share any inspiration photos you have! My goal is always to tell your family’s emotive story, guiding the viewer’s eye just like master painters, and ensuring we capture those simple, beautiful moments that truly matter to you.

Wardrobe & Styling (1-2 Weeks Before)

One of the most common questions I get asked is, ‘What should we wear?!’ And I totally get it – choosing outfits can feel like a big task! But don’t worry, I’m here to help simplify this for you. While I don’t currently offer a client wardrobe, I’ve got plenty of tips to guide you towards choices that will look amazing and feel comfortable.

A. Choosing Outfits:

  1. Coordinate, Don’t Match: This is my golden rule! Instead of everyone wearing identical outfits, think about complementary colors and styles. Imagine a palette of warm, rich, and beautiful tones that blend together harmoniously. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted pastels, and denim often work wonderfully.
  2. Comfort is Key: Especially for your little ones! Choose clothes that allow for movement and play. Avoid anything too tight, scratchy, or restrictive. Happy, comfortable kids make for genuine smiles and beautiful, natural expressions.
  3. Consider the Location: Your outfits should feel right for your chosen backdrop. Flowy dresses and soft fabrics look beautiful in a natural park setting, while cozier knits might be perfect for an in-home session. Also, always check the weather forecast!
  4. What to Avoid: Steer clear of busy patterns, large logos, and neon colors, as these can be distracting in photos. Character clothing, while fun for kids, can also date your images quickly.
  5. Recommended: Think about adding layers and textures – a cute cardigan, a denim jacket, or a textured scarf can add depth and interest to your photos. Subtle accessories can also enhance your look without overpowering it.

B. Laying Out & Trying On: About a week or two before your session, have everyone try on their complete outfits. This is a crucial step! It allows you to check for fit, ensure everything is comfortable, and identify any missing pieces. A quick phone photo of everyone standing together can also give you a great visual of how the colors and styles work as a group.

C. Hair & Makeup: For hair and makeup, my best advice is to keep it natural and timeless. You want to look like the best version of you, not someone else! Avoid drastic hair color changes or new makeup looks right before your session. Plan for simple touch-ups on the day, like a quick brush of the hair or a little lip balm. The goal is to enhance your natural beauty, ensuring those intimate connections and emotive storytelling truly shine through.

Preparing the Family (A Few Days Before)

Now that the big decisions are made, it’s time to get everyone in the family ready for a smooth and enjoyable session! A little preparation in the days leading up to your shoot can make a huge difference.

A. Talk to Your Kids: This is so important! Talk to your children about the photo session in a positive and exciting way. Frame it as a fun adventure where they get to play and cuddle with their family, and a friendly photographer will be there to capture all their happy moments. Avoid using the session as a threat or punishment, and manage their expectations – it’s perfectly okay if they’re not perfect angels the whole time! My experience as a mom of five has taught me that patience and connection are key, and I’m always ready to embrace their unique personalities.

B. Rest and Hydration: A well-rested family is a happy family! Ensure everyone gets a good night’s sleep the night before your session. Staying hydrated in the days leading up to the shoot is also a good idea for everyone’s well-being.

C. Pack a “Session Emergency Kit”: Think of this as your secret weapon for a stress-free session! Pack a bag with essentials like:

  • Snacks: Non-messy, easy-to-eat options like crackers, fruit snacks, or puffs can be lifesavers for hungry little ones.
  • Drinks/Water: Keep everyone hydrated, especially during outdoor sessions.
  • Wipes/Tissues: For quick clean-ups of sticky fingers or runny noses.
  • Small, Non-Distracting Toys/Comfort Items: A favorite lovey or a small toy can sometimes provide a quick distraction or comfort for younger children (just be mindful of how they’ll look in photos).
  • Hairbrush, Lip Balm, Powder: For quick touch-ups for everyone.
  • Change of Clothes: Especially for babies and toddlers – accidents happen!
  • Any Props You Plan to Bring: If we’ve discussed incorporating special items, make sure they’re easily accessible.

The Day of the Session

The big day is here! With all your thoughtful preparation, you’re ready to relax and enjoy the experience.

A. Eat Before You Go: A well-fed family is a happy family! Make sure everyone has had a good meal before heading to the session. This helps prevent meltdowns from hunger and keeps energy levels up.

B. Arrive on Time (or Early): Aim to arrive at our meeting spot a few minutes early. This allows for any last-minute adjustments, a quick restroom break, and a relaxed start to the session, rather than feeling rushed.

C. Trust Your Photographer: You’ve chosen me because you trust my artistic vision and my ability to connect with your family. On the day of the session, let me guide you! I’ll provide direction, suggest poses, and capture those natural, beautiful interactions.

D. Embrace Imperfection: This is perhaps the most important tip! Life with kids is beautifully messy, and your photos should reflect that authenticity. Don’t stress if your children aren’t perfectly cooperative or if a hair is out of place. Often, the most genuine and emotive images come from those candid, unscripted moments. My goal is to capture your family’s unique movement and personal expression, not just forced smiles.

E. Have Fun! Seriously, just enjoy being with your family! Play, laugh, cuddle, and let your genuine emotions shine through. When you’re having fun, it truly translates into beautiful, heartfelt photographs that you’ll treasure for years to come.

Bringing It All Together

Preparing for your family photo session doesn’t have to be overwhelming; in fact, it’s the secret ingredient to a truly enjoyable experience and stunning, timeless results. By taking a little time to plan your vision, coordinate outfits, and prepare your family, you’re setting the stage for a relaxed session where your authentic connections can truly shine.
